SchoffmanThe Body Is His Book is a monumental polyptych consisting of 100 oil paintings created over the past quarter of a century. Schoffman continues the surrealist practice of spontaneous association by dazzling the viewer with flowing, jewel-like textiles that appear somewhere between illuminated manuscripts and haute couture.
With its tightly abutted installation, the grand operatic scale forces the images to collide and merge. These radical juxtapositions play upon our perceptions while emphasizing chance, coincidence, and subconscious connection. Rather than a blueprint of rational planning, Schoffman's work is the perfect post-modern iteration of André Breton's description of surrealism as "the tail of the romantic comet."
Schoffman is an American artist living locally in Los Angeles.
