Jim Sanders 'Nature Spirit Coat'

SandersJim Sanders's work is assembled, cut, tied, woven, found, arranged, and rearranged. His transformative assemblages incorporate symbols and images from monotheistic and pagan beliefs, creating a rich tapestry that tells the myths of our souls. His marks and symbols possess both a primitive and modern aesthetic.
Sanders' monumental "Spirit Memory Coat" embodies and extends surrealist assemblage and ritualistic object-making traditions into contemporary practice. Incorporating ritual elements such as knotted strings—each tied while making silent prayers—into visually dense and sensually alluring compositions, his work is deeply rooted in Pagan cosmology.
Sanders's art manifests the cyclical nature of life, death, and renewal as a consistent, pulsing theme. Sanders' spiritual practice of making work that connects with our spirits carries forth a surrealist dialogue started by artists such as Leonora Carrington, who shares a spiritual kinship with Sanders.
Much like Sanders', Carrington's work was also informed by mythology, incorporating Kabbalah, Celtic themes, and Mexican folk traditions. These elements created mystical environments where boundaries between human, animal, and spiritual realms dissolved. Sanders continues to evolve the shaman's role into the 21st century.
Sanders is a British artist living in Brighton, UK.
