Ángel León Valiente crafts visual parables of exceptional depth. This Cuban-born, Barcelona-based artist merges Latin American magical realism with European surrealist traditions to address displacement and belonging in contemporary life.
His masterfully rendered drawings create a dreamlike vision for us to peer through. Valiente often replaces his subjects' heads to reveal his protagonists' internal dilemmas, like his predecessor, René Magritte, whose allegorical narratives exemplified psychoanalysis, one of the fundamental tenets of surrealism.
Valiente paints what is in our heads - as our heads. This series invites us to connect to who we are and who we portray.
